The first part of its nickname is a misnomer because it’s actually not from Peru. The “apple” part of its nickname alludes to its popular usage as an edible fruit. They are often called “Peruvian apples” or “pitaya.”

Cereus Repandus Appearance
Cereus repandus is a tall, columnar cactus that is multi-stemmed with branching habits. It is one of the tallest cacti in the world and can reach 40-50 feet tall.
The stems are bluish-green to deep-green in color unless they get lots of intense sunlight, in which case they turn into a faded light green.
Small, white areolas grow alongside the wavy ribs. Some have numerous long spines, and some have very few short spines.
Large and beautiful cream-colored flowers that only bloom once at night. A single cactus will grow many flowers, so if you miss a bloom, you will have plenty more opportunities to catch a sighting.
Followed by edible, oval-shaped fruits called “Peruvian apples” or "pitayas” with white pulp and tiny, black seeds.

Cereus repandus is a very large cactus. Provide ample space for growth. To keep size in check, prune and share with neighbors or keep in containers.
Provide shade for young plants, especially in the summertime, as they get established.

Soil: Loose, well-draining soil that is moderately fertile. Cactus or succulent soil mixes work well. Low tolerance to salt.
Temperature: Can withstand temperatures down to 25 degrees for a brief period of time.
Water: Apply occasional, deep watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Either use a moisture meter or stick your finger through the soil to gauge the moisture level. It’s better to err on the side of underwatering than overwatering.
Sun: Full sun. Partial shade is preferred in the Palm Springs region.

Pests: Cereus repandus has minimal pests which include spider mites. To remove them, use horticultural oil for crawlers and insecticidal soap for mites of all stages. Whenever using any kind of pesticide, be aware that it can damage the plant if the temperatures are in the 80s or above.
