Washingtonia robusta, commonly known as the Mexican fan palm, is a tall, slender palm tree native to northwestern Mexico. It features a smooth, gray-brown trunk that can reach heights of up to 100 feet and is topped with a crown of large, fan-shaped, bright green fronds. The petiole has serrated edges, which are very sharp. The tree produces small, white flowers and black, berry-like fruits. Washingtonia filibusta is a hybrid palm resulting from the cross between Washingtonia robusta (Mexican fan palm) and Washingtonia filifera (California fan palm). It combines the best traits of both parents, featuring a moderately thick trunk—thicker than W. robusta but slimmer than W. filifera—and a dense crown of fan-shaped, green fronds. This hybrid is more cold-hardy than W. robusta and more resistant to drought than W. filifera, making it a popular choice for landscapes in regions with variable climates. Its durability and aesthetic appeal make it a favored ornamental palm in urban and arid environments.
