African Candelabra (Euphorbia Ingens)

from $15.00

Euphorbia ingens, commonly known as the Candelabra Tree or Cowboy Cactus, is a succulent plant species native to southern Africa, particularly in regions such as South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. It is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family and is highly regarded for its unique and striking appearance.

The Euphorbia ingens is a succulent tree that can grow up to heights of 30 feet (9 meters) or more. It features a thick, upright, columnar stem with several prominent branches resembling candelabras, hence its common name. The stem is pale green or bluish-green in color, covered with sharp, triangular thorns or spines, which serve as a protective mechanism.

The leaves of Euphorbia ingens are small, insignificant, and ephemeral, often falling off quickly. Instead, the plant's green stem carries out photosynthesis. In addition to its architectural appeal, the Candelabra Tree produces clusters of small, greenish-yellow flowers during the spring and summer months, followed by small, rounded fruit capsules that contain seeds.

It's important to note that Euphorbia ingens, like many other Euphorbia species, contains a milky sap that can be toxic and irritating to the skin and eyes. Therefore, it's advisable to handle the plant with care and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
