Pine Cone Cactus (Tephrocactus Strobiliformis)
Pine Cone Cactus (Tephrocactus Strobiliformis)
Tephrocactus Strobiliformis, commonly known as the Pine Cone Cactus, is a small and intriguing cactus species native to Argentina. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and is renowned for its unique growth habit and distinctive appearance.
The Tephrocactus Strobiliformis features cylindrical stems that are divided into distinct, cone-shaped segments resembling miniature pine cones, which explains its common name. These segments are usually greenish-gray or bluish-green in color and covered in numerous spines. The spines can be short and hair-like or longer and more rigid, providing protection for the plant.
One of the notable characteristics of this cactus is its ability to produce offsets or "pups" abundantly. These offsets emerge from the base of the plant and can form dense clusters, creating a striking visual effect. As the offsets mature, they can detach from the parent plant and root to become new individuals.
During the flowering season, which typically occurs in spring or early summer, Tephrocactus Strobiliformis produces small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of yellow or pink. These flowers emerge from the top of the stem segments, adding a touch of color and charm to the plant's overall appearance.
Tephrocactus Strobiliformis is well-suited to arid and desert-like conditions and thrives in well-draining soil with plenty of sunlight. It is often grown as an ornamental plant in rock gardens, container gardens, or as part of cactus and succulent collections due to its intriguing form, ease of cultivation, and ability to produce offsets.
Plants are shipped bare root. Most specimens will be single stalk. Soil used to repot should be easy draining. Water again only once soil is nearly dry. Wear protective gloves prior to handling
