Totem Pole Cactus (Lophocereus Schottii var Monstrosus)
Totem Pole Cactus, scientifically known as Pachycereus Schottii Monstrosus and Lophocereus Schottii var Monstrosus, is a unique and visually striking cactus species that belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is a cultivar derived from the species Pachycereus schottii, which is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
What sets the Totem Pole Cactus apart is its distinctive growth habit and appearance. Instead of the typical branching or columnar form of most cacti, this cultivar grows vertically in a single, elongated column, resembling a totem pole. The stem can reach impressive heights, sometimes exceeding 6 feet (1.8 meters), making it a captivating addition to gardens and indoor plant collections.
The stem of the Totem Pole Cactus is ribbed and has a smooth surface. It features a light gray to bluish-green coloration and is covered in clusters of small, spiky areoles. Unlike many cacti, this cultivar lacks significant spines or thorns, which adds to its unique and appealing aesthetic.
This cactus is relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in various environments, including arid and desert regions. It prefers well-draining soil and requires occasional watering, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. The Totem Pole Cactus is also relatively cold hardy, able to withstand temperatures down to around 20°F (-6°C).
Due to its striking appearance and manageable care requirements, the Totem Pole Cactus has gained popularity as a decorative plant. It can be grown both indoors and outdoors, provided it receives sufficient sunlight and protection from extreme weather conditions. However, it's important to note that this cultivar is not found in the wild, as it is a product of selective breeding and propagation by horticulturists.
Plants are shipped bare root. Most specimens will be single stalk. Soil used to repot should be easy draining. Water again only once soil is nearly dry.
